London is the capital and largest urban area of both England and the United Kingdom. Greater London covers an area of over 600 square miles and contains an estimated eight million people. The city of London is one of the three largest financial centers in the world (New York and Tokyo are the other two) and ranks as one of the most expensive cities alongside Tokyo and Moscow.

London’s main entertainment and shopping district is referred to as the West End. It contains tourist destinations like Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street, and Convent Garden. The East End is the area closest to the original Port of London. This area was originally developed as industrial but is currently undergoing a redevelopment that includes the Thames Gateway, Lower Lea Valley, and building the new Olympic Park.
The Summer Olympics come to London July 27 through August 12, 2012. This is the third time the city has been selected to host the Summer Olympics, 1908 and 1948 were the two previous years. London is the first city in Olympic history to host the Summer Olympics three times.
Red double-decker buses, black cabs and the Tube are internationally recognizable icons of London.
